Herein you will find the research that I have done in the last few years at Hampshire; more will be added as projects are completed at UCSD.

Current Research

Genetic Programming

I am currently focusing on how to promote the evolution of modular programs as a way to increase the ability of Genetic Programming to evolve useful and interesting solutions to computationally difficult problems.

Publications and Technical Reports :

Robinson, A., and L. Spector. 2002. Using Genetic Programming with Multiple Data Types and Automatic Modularization to Evolve Decentralized and Coordinated Navigation in Multi-Agent Systems. In Late-Breaking Papers of GECCO-2002, the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference. Published by the International Society for Genetic and Evolutionary Computation. (pdf 33KB)

Spector, L., and A. Robinson. 2002. Genetic Programming and Autoconstructive Evolution with the Push Programming Language. In Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines, Vol. 3, No. 1, pp. 7-40. (pdf 216KB)

Spector, L., and A. Robinson. 2002. Multi-type, Self-adaptive Genetic Programming as an Agent Creation Tool. In Proceedings of the Workshop on Evolutionary Computation for Multi-Agent Systems, ECOMAS-2002, International Society for Genetic and Evolutionary Computation. (pdf 527KB)

Spector, L., R. Moore, and A. Robinson. 2001. Virtual Quidditch: A Challenge Problem for Automatically Programmed Software Agents. In E.D. Goodman, editor, Late-Breaking Papers of GECCO-2001, the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference. Published by the International Society for Genetic and Evolutionary Computation. (pdf 244KB).

Robinson, A. 2001. Genetic Programming: Theory, Implementation, and the Evolution of Unconstrained Solutions. Hampshire College Division III (senior) thesis. (pdf 652KB)

Cognitive Psychology

I am currently working  Joanna Morris on the ERP components elicited by face perception and recognition.

Publications and Technical Reports:

Robinson, A., and J. Morris. 2002. Is the N170 ERP Component Face Specific? Poster presentation at meeting of Psychonomic Society, Kansas City (pdf 222K)

Recent Research

I'm still working on converting all my earlier work into web ready formats.

RoboCup Soccer Vehicles

This work combined my interest in Braitenberg's philosophical analysis of behavior in Vehicles, and the highly empirical RoboCup Soccer contest.

MP3 Audio Quality Assessment

Two pilot studies on the perceived quality of digital audio encoded in the MP3 format. Includes background on the theoretical underpinnings of MP3 encoding and decoding, as well as notes on the current technical implementations.
